This week, the spotlight is on Silver Spring, Maryland, and Silver Branch Brewing Company, the craft brewery and biergarten at 8401 Colesville Road that has anchored Downtown Silver Spring since 2019.

Silver Branch was founded in March 2019 by Christian Layke and Brett A. Robison, two longtime locals. Layke spent years as a brewer at Gordon Biersch in Rockville, and Robison ran the Takoma Park restaurant Republic, so they knew the region's tastes before pouring their first pint. The brewery is built around the German idea of Gemütlichkeit, meaning warmth, belonging, and good company, and the taproom delivers exactly that: a welcoming room beside the Silver Spring Red Line Metro station where neighbors, commuters, and families all feel at home.

The beer program takes tradition seriously, celebrating the four great brewing cultures, Belgium, Britain and Ireland, Central Europe, and the Americas, and serving each style in the glassware its tradition calls for. That discipline paid off early: its Beyond the Gnome World saison took a gold medal at the 2020 Great American Beer Festival in the classic saison category, a rare honor for a brewery barely a year old. Today it holds a 4.6-star rating on Google with 500-plus reviews and has grown into a multi-state brewery with taprooms in Rockville and Warrenton, Virginia.
