Welcome back to Community Spotlight, where I feature the independent businesses that make the DC Metro's neighborhoods worth calling home. This week, the spotlight is on Bethesda, Maryland, and Fresh Baguette, the French artisan bakery and café at 4919 Bethesda Avenue that has anchored Bethesda Row since 2013.
Fresh Baguette opened its very first location here in downtown Bethesda in October 2013. Founder Florent de Felcourt, a French native from Burgundy and a former French naval officer, spent years as a naval and military attaché at the French embassy in Washington. During his time in the DC area he searched for the kind of neighborhood bakery he grew up with in France, found nothing comparable, and decided to build it himself. Fresh Baguette was the result.
The bakery stays true to that French standard. Every loaf and pastry is made from scratch, its bread machines and ovens were imported from France, and it uses organic flour. No bread is sold more than three hours old, and its croissants take two days and eleven steps to make. The craft earned recognition early: Fresh Baguette won the audience prize in the Best Capital Baguette competition in Washington, and the Bethesda shop has since grown into a small regional chain across DC, Maryland, and Virginia, with this original location still at its heart.
Why Fresh Baguette stands out in Bethesda
Downtown Bethesda is full of places to grab a coffee or a bite, so what sets Fresh Baguette apart? Authenticity and consistency. It delivers the experience of a French neighborhood bakery, warm baguettes, buttery laminated pastries, and strong espresso, without the pretense. The morning line of commuters, parents, and regulars says it all. It is the kind of independent anchor that gives Bethesda Row its character, alongside the shops and restaurants that make downtown Bethesda one of Montgomery County's most walkable communities.
For more on living here, the Bethesda neighborhood guide covers homes, schools, and the questions buyers ask most. The Montgomery County market check adds useful context for nearby prices, and the Montgomery County selling guide walks through the seller's process.
